Finzi By Footpath and Stile

Barber Dover Beach

Beethoven String Quartet in A minor, op.132

Finzi’s collection of songs is the youthful first cycle which began his fifty settings of Hardy poems.  Barber’s background, deeply rooted in singing, his love of poetry, and his intimate knowledge and appreciation of the human voice, inspired his vocal writing. His most famous vocal compositions, Knoxville: Summer of 1915 (to words by James Agee) andDover Beach (to the poem by Matthew Arnold), were immediate successes.  Beethoven’s String Quartet op. 132 was commissioned by Prince Galitzin. Beethoven was recovering from an illness when he wrote this piece, the most famous movement being a ‘Song of Thanksgiving to the Deity on Recovery from an Illness, in the Lydian Mode’.
